Program Audience and Entry Standards

Akamai offers access to its MBA program for eligible professionals from the fields of business and corporate management, international business, government and nonprofit management, e-commerce, entrepreneurship and small business operations, and economic development. For acceptance to the MBA program, participants should have completed a recognized baccalaureate degree or equivalent in business or another appropriate field and have several years of meaningful professional experience at upper levels of management.

In lieu of the Bachelor’s degree, applicants are considered with a recognized Graduate or Postgraduate Diploma and a minimum of five years of increasingly more responsible business experience. Such applicants are required to submit appropriate letters of recommendation verifying the prerequisite capabilities and motivation to succeed in advanced study and research within the time allotted. Applicants accepted in the absence of the Bachelor's degree are required to add essential missing academic elements to the minimum program, as a condition for admission.

Successful applicants are proficient in English language or provide assurance of effective language support. Participants must demonstrate access to a computer, email and Internet and academic library resources for the duration of their studies.

Degree Requirements
MBA participants complete a minimum of 40 credits above the baccalaureate degree including coursework comprising the core elements, a business concentration, a comprehensive review, and the thesis project, as outlined below:

    Research Preparation (Required: 3 credits minimum)
    Master's participants pursue studies providing advanced research knowledge necessary for success in their theses and final projects. At least three semester credits of research preparation are required. Preparation might focus upon business research or quantitative, statistical, and qualitative methods or participatory action research techniques. The focus of the research preparation covers subject selection, research design, and statistical analysis, as appropriate to each participant's final project. Through this requirement, participants learn to effectively define applied problems or theoretical issues and articulate the rationale for the study. They should learn to present an effective scholarly review of the academic literature and implement quantitative, qualitative or participatory action methods for evaluating academic issues.

    Final Comprehensive Review
    Once the coursework elements are completed, participants schedule the final comprehensive review. The final review includes both written and oral components covering the major elements of the MBA program. The written portion is open book style with selected essay questions requesting creative responses that reach for the higher levels of cognition. Participant written responses cover the full spectrum of the program and include proper citations and referencing of the scholarly literature. The oral component, conducted by telephone, synchronous online or face-to-face conferencing, permits detailed investigation of the participant’s written responses.

    Thesis Proposal
    Master's participants prepare a formal proposal related to the concept for research (or major business project) under the supervision of faculty and following the guidelines provided by the University.

    Thesis Project
    Following approval of the thesis proposal, participants begin the research project. The thesis may take the form of a traditional research project or it may be a major scholarly project of the type appropriate to the discipline. Whichever approach to the thesis is approved, the resulting project must demonstrate mastery of a body of knowledge in the major field of study, be the original work of the participant and represent a meaningful contribution to the betterment of the human condition or an improvement of the professional field. The thesis research may be conducted via quantitative, qualitative, or participatory action research. The body of the thesis manuscript, structured according to a set of approved manuscript guidelines, should exceed 75 double spaced, typewritten pages. If the thesis takes the form of a major scholarly project, it must follow the guidelines provided by the University for such projects.

    Formal Review of Thesis
    Once the participants have prepared the thesis manuscript, they will be asked to schedule the formal review process. The primary mentor and a faculty member representing the secondary academic area will conduct the formal physical review of the thesis manuscript and the oral review of thesis. The physical review of the thesis manuscript usually takes the review committee four to six weeks. Each reviewer will prepare questions and commentary relative to the underlying review of the literature, the thesis methodology, the mechanics of your project, and the presentation of the findings, conclusions and recommendations. The oral examination is carried out by telephone conference call and is designed to allow detailed investigation of the thesis. The faculty reviewers explore issues related to the thesis including methodology, review of literature and interpretation of the findings. One outcome of the thesis review process is a set of final expectations directing the participant through the remaining tasks for completing the thesis manuscript. Once the final manuscript is approved, the participant will submit the formal document to an approved bindery and later ship the bound thesis to the University for permanent archival storage.

    EXM 895: Oral Review of Thesis (Required: 2 credits)

    Course Credit Transfer
    Students may transfer credit awarded at outside universities, colleges, training institutes, professional awarding bodies, and examination centers, provided the prior learning satisfies meaningful elements of the student's program of studies. Credit is not granted in transfer, if credits have already been applied toward a prior degree. Credit applied toward a prior degree may be considered for course waiver eligibility or may be applied as a supporting element within a professional portfolio presentation. Students are advised to carefully review the University's transfer credit requirements and guidelines and undertake detailed discussions with the primary faculty advisor or the administration concerning credit transfer and course waiver alternatives. MBA credit transfers from approved institutions shall be limited to 75% of the degree credit requirements or 30 credits.

    Equivalency Credit from Experiential Learning
    Most mid-career adults have creditworthy elements in their backgrounds for which sufficient credible evidence exists of advanced level learning. The source of prior learning might include work experience, formal non-college training, continuing education, seminars and conferences, career experiences and personal achievements, employment training, technical classes, training leading to special certificates, diplomas and licenses and other advanced level learning obtained from personal and professional achievements. The University respects the college-level learning of its adult students to the extent that such learning is appropriate to the degrees pursued and satisfies the expectations of the faculty. Akamai awards credit from prior learning in the form of portfolios and challenge examinations within certain clearly defined limits strictly in fulfillment of the requirements of course modules available at the University. Credit from assessment of prior learning is limited to 25% of the degree credit requirements or 10 credits at the level of the MBA.
